WELCOME TO THE EAST ORANGE YMCA AQUATICS PROGRAM! Our aquatics program is new and improved. Our certified instructors are experienced at working with children and adults of all ages and abilities. All aquatics staff is trained in the latest YMCA of the USA aquatics guidelines and procedures. Staff help participants develop a sense of security in and around the water and gain the skills necessary for one of life’s most valuable activities – swimming. All classes are held at the East Orange YMCA – Main Building located at 100 North Arlington Avenue. Our aquatics facility features a heated swimming pool available year round in addition to lockers and showers for men and women. PARENT AND TODDLER CLASS: Children ages 2 – 4 years old Parent and child work together on basic skills, water safety and independence. Children adjust to the water through, exploration, safety instruction, parent/child bonding, fun songs and games A parent or guardian must accompany their child in the water. Day & Time: Tuesday 5:30 – 6:30pm Cost: $70.00 for 8 weeks**
PRESCHOOL SWIM: Children ages 4 & 5 year olds PIKE: Total beginning swimmer without parent Objective: Learn basic water adaptation skills, paddle stroke with floatation device and swim 10 feet unassisted. EEL: For the beginning swimmer who can get their face wet comfortably, back float with assistance and swim unassisted for a short distance. Objective: Learn to swim at least 15 feet unassisted and learn safety techniques. RAYS: For the preschool swimmer who can submerge comfortably, back float without assistance and jump from the side of the pool. Objective: Swim freestyle (with rotary breathing), back float, kneeling dive and tread water. YOUTH PROGRESSIVE INSTRUCTION: Children ages 5 years old and up Our progressive swim lessons follow guidelines established by the YMCA of the USA. Swimmers are required to master all skills in a level before advancing. POLLIWOG: For the beginning swimmer, confidence and safety will be stressed along with strong swimming basics. Objective: Learn to swim 10 feet unassisted. MINNOW: For the swimmer that can swim freestyle across the pool unassisted, tread water and jump into the pool. Objective: Swim 1 lap freestyle, backstroke, and beginning breaststroke, tread water for 1 minute, dive into the deep end and jump off the diving block. FISH: For the advancing young swimmer who can swim 1 lap of freestyle, backstroke and beginning breaststroke. Objective: Swim 2 laps (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and dolphin kick) tread water for 2 minutes and dive off a diving block. FLYING FISH: For swimmers that can swim 2 laps of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and dive off diving block. Objective: Swim freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, 3 laps nonstop and start racing dives. Days and Time: Wednesday 4:30 – 5:30pm or 5:30 – 6:30pm Thursday 4:30 – 5:30pm or 5:30 – 6:30pm Cost: $70.00 for 8 weeks** ADULT SWIM CLASSES For the beginner swimmer, to build confidence and safety skills will be stressed along with strong swimming basics. Objective: Learn to swim 10 feet unassisted. Day and Time: Monday 5:30 – 6:30pm Cost: $70.00 for 8 weeks** **NO MAKE-UPS FOR MISSED AQUATIC CLASSES. WE DO GIVE MAKE-UP CLASSES IF THE EAST ORANGE YMCA CANCELLS A CLASS DUE TO TECHNICAL ISSUES. SPECIAL CLASSES AND OR EVENTS POOL PARTIES: Rent our heated pool and party area for birthday parties or special events. SPECIAL POPULATION AQUATICS: Our swimming pool is handicapped accessible and can be utilized for programs geared toward those with special needs.
