SHARON PARKER (Childcare Director)

  • WHAT is your role at the EAST ORANGE YMCA and what makes it fun or worthwhile?

My role at the East Orange YMCA is to ensure that the Preschool Program is running smoothly and the children are developing and having fun while they are in school.

  • NAME one quality, skill or personality trait that is necessary to work for a non-profit like the YMCA and why?

I feel you have to be dedicated because I am responsible for so many tasks.

  • Tell us something silly or interesting that you do (can do) or something silly or interesting about you.  (i.e. you walk dogs in your spare time, you're afraid of clowns, you bake a mean carrot cake, etc...)
I love HGTV.  In my second life, I want to be a carpenter with a big tool belt and lots of tools.

RHONDA SINGLETON (Program Director)

  • WHAT is your favorite Y-Child moment (something that a child said or did that made you laugh)?

Q. Ms. Rhonda do you have any children?  A. Yes!  Over 100 (smile).

  • HOW do you promote the Y's three areas of focus - youth development, healthy living and social responsibility - inside and outside of the EAST ORANGE YMCA?

Youth Development - serve as a mentor.  Healthy Living - leading by example and encouraging our youth to make healthy choices.  Social Responsibility - encouraging students to respect one another and be supportive.

  • HEELS/shoes or sneakers?  Dress/suit or jeans?  Walk or drive?  Spring or fall?  Candy or cake?  Sun or shade?
Sneakers.  Jeans.  Walk.  Spring.  Cake.  Sun

AND INTRODUCING OUR SUPPORTING CAST (We can't do it without them):

We asked our Counselors, Teachers, Child Care Staff, etc... a few questions to get social.

Here's some of our favorites....

KENNETH JAMES (Enrichment Counselor)

  • WHAT is the first thing you do when you wake up and last thing you do before going to sleep?

The first thing I do when I wake up is pray and the last thing I do before going to sleep is watch the news.

  • WHAT are your top 5 TV shows?

Matlock, Columbo, Different World, Sanford and Son and Martin.

  • Do you have a preference to work while school is in session or while camp is happening?
My preference is to work while school is in session because I find it easier to reinforce school, societal and family values during school versus summer break.

INDIA WASHINGTON (Child Care Staff)
  • WHAT do you want people to know about the EAST ORANGE YMCA that they may have a misconception about?

There is no work out/exercise facility.

  • NAME one quality, skill or personality trait that is necessary to work for a non-profit like the YMCA and why?

Being a people person and a strong believer in responsibility because the parents like my work ethic.

  • HOW do you promote the Y's three areas of focus - youth development, healthy living and social responsibility - inside and outside of the EAST ORANGE YMCA?
I eat healthy at home and at the Y.  I always promote social responsibility by correcting the kids when they do something wrong.

JANNAH ALI (After-School Counselor)

  • WHAT is your role at the EAST ORANGE YMCA and what makes it fun or worthwhile?

I am a counselor for the After-School Program.  When I'm greeted everyday by the kids with huge hugs and smiles it makes my job worthwhile.

  • HEELS/SHOES or sneakers?  Dress or jeans? Walk or drive?  Spring or fall?  Candy or cake?  Sun or shade?

Heels/shoes; jeans; drive; spring; candy; shade

  • TELL us something silly or interesting that you do (can do) or something silly or interesting about you?
I love to watch cartoons.  I can stay home all day and watch Spongebob Squarepants.

MARKIL HOWARD (After-School Counselor)

  • WHAT is your favorite Y-Child moment (something that a child said or did that made you laugh)?

When a child tried to use a punchline on another child and he said "How many letters are in the alphabet?"  The other child answered "26."  The jokester said "no, 21 minus U R A Q T!"  That was funny to hear.

  • WHAT is the first thing you do when you wake up and the last thing you do before you go to bed?

The first thing I do when I wake up and the last thing I do is pray!

  • TELL us something silly or interesting that you do (can do) or something silly or interesting about you?
I can solve the Rubik's Cube in 2 minutes and I'm afraid of heights and bees.
